5 Website Speed Tips Every Small Business Should Know

Speed isn’t a nice-to-have anymore. It’s the first impression.

A visitor decides whether to stay on your site in about the time it takes to blink. If the page hasn’t loaded yet, that decision is already made — and it’s not the one you wanted.

1. Compress every image before it goes live

Full-size camera photos are 10-20x bigger than they need to be online. Compress and resize before upload — it’s the single biggest speed win on most small business sites.

2. Cut the plugins you don’t use

Every plugin adds code that has to load, whether it’s doing anything or not. Deactivate and delete what you’re not actively using.

3. Use a real caching setup

Caching serves a pre-built version of your page instead of rebuilding it from scratch every visit. It’s one of the highest-leverage changes you can make with the least effort.

4. Load fonts smart, not heavy

Custom fonts are great for brand identity, but loading five weights of three different typefaces will quietly slow every page down. Pick two, maybe three weights, and stop there.

5. Test on mobile, on a real connection

Your office wifi is not what your customers are using. Test your site on a phone, on regular cellular data, and see what they actually experience.

Small changes here compound. A site that loads fast doesn’t just feel better — it ranks better, converts better, and gets shared more.
