How Fenway Web Built the Boston Made Foundation

When Fenway Web began developing the Boston Made Foundation, the objective was intentional and clearly defined: build a nonprofit platform that serves the City of Boston and its surrounding communities—without advertising pressure, paywalls, or gatekeeping.

An Open-Source Directory Designed for Community Growth

When Fenway Web began developing the Boston Made Foundation, the objective was intentional and clearly defined: build a nonprofit platform that serves the City of Boston and its surrounding communities—without advertising pressure, paywalls, or gatekeeping.

That platform lives at www.BostonMade.org.

It is important to draw a clear distinction:

  • BostonMade.org is the nonprofit, philanthropic arm

  • BostonMade.com is the for-profit media and brand ecosystem

While both operate under the broader Boston Made vision, they exist for very different purposes.

From Concept to Community Infrastructure

Fenway Web, the Boston-born web design and creative agency behind many Boston Made initiatives, approached the Foundation not as a marketing website—but as public-facing digital infrastructure.

The goal was to create a system that:

  • Is completely free to use

  • Is accessible to businesses of all sizes

  • Allows users to manage their own presence

  • Scales with community participation

  • Operates transparently and sustainably

Using WordPress as the foundation, Fenway Web engineered a custom, live user directory that allows anyone to create an account and manage their own local listing in real time.

This includes restaurants, cultural and arts centers, hotels, valet parking services, nonprofits, retailers, and other organizations in and around the City of Boston.

01

Discovery & Strategy Planning – Fenway Web started by understanding the Foundation’s mission, audience, and goals to shape the brand’s voice and online direction.

02

Brand Identity & Content Framework – They established a coherent visual identity and content structure that reflects the Boston Made Foundation’s purpose within the broader Boston Made ecosystem.

03

Custom Website Design & Development – The team then designed and built a tailored, responsive website that aligns with the brand look and delivers a clear, user-centric experience.

04

Launch & Optimization – Finally, Fenway Web implemented performance, SEO, and content optimization before launch, ensuring the site effectively communicates impact and engages visitors.

A Clear Separation Between Nonprofit and For-Profit

While BostonMade.com powers the for-profit brands, media platforms, and commercial ventures within the Boston Made ecosystem, the Boston Made Foundation at BostonMade.org exists solely to serve the community.

The Foundation is not designed to sell visibility.
It is designed to give it away.

This separation ensures:

  • Transparency in mission

  • No conflicts between commerce and community

  • Equal access for all participants

Fenway Web intentionally built BostonMade.org with a nonprofit-first mindset—focused on long-term civic value rather than short-term monetization.

Explore What To Do — Built for the Community

Beyond listings, the Foundation supports local discovery through its Explore What To Do experience—helping residents and visitors connect with the people, places, and services that make Boston vibrant.

This feature is powered entirely by community participation. The more organizations that claim or create listings, the richer the ecosystem becomes.

No cost.
No gatekeeping.
Just community.

Fenway Web’s Role: Building With Intention

Fenway Web served as the architect and builder of the Boston Made Foundation platform, delivering:

  • Custom WordPress development

  • Secure user account systems

  • Live directory functionality

  • Clean, intuitive user experience

  • Mobile-first performance

  • Scalable infrastructure for future growth

Every technical and design decision was guided by one principle: technology should empower communities, not restrict them.
